Doug sometimes ate at the same lunch table as I did. I remember him telling a story about someone getting a ridiculous haircut, which looked like the barber had placed a bowl over the guy's head before he began snipping. As Doug was outlining the look he was describing, he ran his hand beneath his own bowl-like cut bangs. Laughter ensued.

I think Doug may have died in uniform in Vietnam. I'll need to verify that, though.

I located in the National Archives a "Douglas James Rummel" born on July 9, 1950 who died in Vietnam of "other causes" on June 13, 1970 at 19 years of age. Apparently that is not our classmate, as the middle name and spelling of the last name are different. It's an uncanny similarity, though.

Doug and I were good friends in high school. He had the best vocabulary and he helped me improve mine. To this day, I think of him when I say certain words! Isn't it funny the things we remember? He was a sweet, fun guy to be around and I always enjoyed his company. The last time I saw him was when he came to my house, during Thanksgiving break from college. It was really nice catching up with him. As I recall, he had died in a freak jeep accident on base, somewhere in the states.
